Milestone, Progress, and A Kiddo Moment

Last week, on Wednesday February 25th, was my 18th radiation treatment, which, if you’re keeping score at home, was the halfway point of my radiation treatments.  Which is pretty great, if you ask me!!

I was also supposed to have my second chemotherapy treatment on Wednesday, but ran into a small setback – nothing treatment related – but I got some sort of stomach bug, and they couldn’t complete the treatment, and instead just kept me in hospital overnight for observations.

So I was in earlier this week for my chemo treatment!! Which is two of three during my radiation treatments.

And things, overall, are still pretty good.  The side effects are obviously still here, but they haven’t really gotten worse the last few days.  But with the second round of chemo, I’m expecting them to start gradually getting worse.  Part of the process, so I’m trying to face them head on!

Later this month, my son turns 5.  Seriously, I’m going to have a 5-year-old in like a week.  It’s amazing seeing how he’s gone from being a toddler, to being a little man… and being his first year in school, kindergarten has really helped him “grow up” a bit.  He vocabulary, his awareness of the world, and just his ability to understand things has really been eye opening to me.  It’s amazing to see him grow up.  And seeing my daughter, and how much she is able to absorb from him, is incredible.  She is definitely “ahead” of him at the same age, which I would probably think is pretty common for second kids.  It’s pretty incredible to see how much she looks up to him, and is curious about everything that he does.  And, having a younger sister myself, I know it will only be a matter of time before this turns into….. something less friendly and adorable!! (Love you sis!)

So what to do for a 5-year-old’s birthday party, especially given the circumstances of my health this year.  My wife thought going to Loblaws for a “Cooking Party”, which is apparently the thing to do this year. And my son loves to help when my wife is baking or help put to toppings on pizza, so why not?  Except when we asked him if he was interested, he said no.  And then said “I want to go where we went last year… That was a lot of fun”. Seriously, he remembered where he spend 2 hours a year ago, and wanted to go there again.  So fine, we booked the same indoor playground, and the kids can burn off some energy for a couple of hours.

It’s moments like this that give me all the strength I need to #kickcancersass.

Avanti!!!
